The Litchfield Municipality could claim that, "we have it all" in terms of the rich history of Australia's Top End. It would certainly be difficult to find a region elsewhere which has the same extensive variety of significant historic themes within its boundaries.

The Litchfield Shire (as known until 2008) was named after Frederick Henry Litchfield and the land is the traditional home of the Larrakia, Woolner and Djowei Aboriginal people.
