Plan a Funeral

Generally there are five cost components of a funeral:

  • Funeral Director service and fee: The role of the Funeral Director is to assist in every way possible to ensure the wishes of the family and the deceased are fulfilled. The costs associated with a funeral vary due to the number of choices available, which allows a true reflection of personal, cultural and religious needs.
  • The coffin or casket costs which can vary based on the construction and type, quality, finish and style that has been chosen.
  • Cemetery and crematoria charges see fees and Charges »
  • Service booklets, thank you cards, memorial books and visual presentations.
  • Optional newspaper notices, floral tributes, celebrant or clergy fees, music and catering.

Pre-need Planning

Pre-need planning provides the option for individuals and families to purchase or reserve a burial plot or cremation and interment services for future use.

Thorak Regional Cemetery has a variety of options available.

Burials

The first option is that a person can reserve the Exclusive Right of Burial for a plot. This is a reservation only. It is not a deposit and it is not deducted off the price of burial. When the plot is required to be used for the reserved person’s actual burial, the full price of burial is required to be paid at the rates existing at the time.

The second option is for a person to buy a Pre-Need Purchase of Burial in Full. The fee for a Pre-Need Purchase of Burial in Full is the full cost of a burial at the existing time of purchase. At the time the actual burial is required, no further charges will apply (apart from the Funeral Director fee’s) and the Pre-Need Purchase of Burial in Full, once paid, is not affected by any future fee increases.

Cremations

The first option is that a person can reserve the Exclusive Right of Cremated Remains Interment for a plot. This is a reservation only. It is not a deposit and it is not deducted off the price of the cremated remains interment. When the plot is required to be used for the reserved person’s actual cremated remains to be interred, the full price of Interment of Cremated Remains is required to be paid at the rates existing at the time.

The second option is for a person to buy a Pre-Need Purchase of Cremation in Full. The fee for a Pre-Need Purchase of Cremation in Full is the full cost of a cremation and interment of ashes at the existing time of purchase. At the time the actual cremation and interment of ashes is required, no further charges will apply (apart from the Funeral Director fee’s) and the Pre-Need Purchase of Cremation in Full, once paid, is not affected by any future fee increases.

When purchasing either of these options, the existing Ground Maintenance Fee and Certificate Fee will also be included in the total cost.

Note: The cost of either of these options is only for the use of the grave space for burial purposes. There is no deed transfer or ownership entitlement to the land of the intended user. The land is owned by the Northern Territory Government.

Advantages of planning ahead at Thorak Regional Cemetery,

  • The cost of a Pre-Need Purchase of Burial in Full is fixed and will not be affected by future price increases
  • Purchasing a Pre-Need removes one of the many un-expected financial burdens when death is unexpected.
  • Purchasing the right of interment in advance provides an opportunity to secure specific grave locations, allowing family members to be close together.
  • If knowing where you wish to be buried, this will ensure that wishes are carried out while family members are reassured the person is where they wanted to be.
  • Cemetery plots are not counted as assets and therefore do not impact pension payments.
