Gamba grass has been declared a weed in the Northern TerritoryThe Northern Territory Government has declared the invasive plant gamba grass a weed. Read the media release here
The decision prohibits any new planting of the popular pasture grass that was introduced in the 1930's and is now highly invasive and a wildfire hazard.
The NT government says landholders in a zone between Darwin and Katherine who use the grass as pasture will be able to continue doing so, but won't be allowed to plant any more, and will have to control its spread.
Landholders in the rest of the Territory will need to start trying to eradicate the weed.
The Government will work in partnership with the community and landholders to manage gamba grass and other noxious weeds (of which there are many varieties) to control the spread of noxious weed.
