Fire Break around a rural property
Fire Management
Landowner Responsibilities
Fire Breaks / Fire Access Trails / Permits & Information
Fire is a big part of living in the Top End and the better prepared you are for a bushfire the easier it will be to protect your assets. Fire prevention, fire break construction and reduction of fuel loads are the responsibility of the landowner/occupiers. Reduce it or lose it!
As a rural landholder you must;
- establish a fire break around your property and
- reduce the fuel load on your property
Firebreaks must be bordering all external boundaries; however they can deviate around wet or rocky areas and large trees.
Firebreaks should be a minimum of 4m wide, graded or slashed to a maximum height of 50mm, with all slashed material removed.
Firebreaks should be maintained all year round, penalties apply for non compliance. For enquiries relating to fire breaks or property fire maintenance call Patrick Skewes- Fire Fighter- Hazard Reduction(NTFRS) on 8988 0298. For Bush Fires NT call the Vernon Office on 8976 0098.
The Bushfires Act and Bushfires Regulations can be viewed on the NT Government web site at http://www.nt.gov.au/, go to a-z government and open Hansard and legislation.
If you do not comply with the NT Fire and Emergency Act or the Bushfires Act
Landholders who do not establish a firebreak around their property have committed an offence and may be prosecuted. You could face fines of up to $25,000 or imprisonment for 5 years if you do not comply.
A Fire Ban may be declared during periods of Extreme fire danger. During this time no fires of any kind may be lit in the open air.
